EHRCEPA Signed an Agreement with the Edukans and Oak Foundations
EHRCEPA signed an agreement with Edukans Foundation on the Promotion of Sustainable Child Rights Protection Program through Alternative Child Basic Education (ABCE) and Family Based Primary Education Assistance (FBPEA) Project after evaluating 2004 - 2006 programs by external evaluators. This agreement is in effect for four years as of January 2007, benefiting directly children, teachers, Education offices, CBOs, CSOs, FBOs in the North Shewa zone, Amhara Regional state. A similar agreement was signed with the Oak foundation to implement programs on early marriage prevention and victim support.
The association conducted urban and rural based projects on women's rights and gender equality with emphasis on HIV/AIDS
The project was implemented through village based house-to-house education, radio broadcasting, school competitions, drama and songs, sensitization workshops, and the training and organization of village-based human rights violations monitoring groups (VBHRVMG). This occurred in Merhabete and Mida Woromo districts of North Shoa Zone, Amhara Regional State with the financial support of Dan Church Aid (DCA). A total of 9,388 community members were reached through a house-to-house strategy in the year 2006 and 8,583 in the first half of 2007. A total of 21,877 community members and school communities (6,349 in 2006 and 15,528 in the first half of 2007) were addressed through school competitions and drama shows. EHRCEPA organized 98 village based human rights violation monitoring group (VBHRVMG) in 2006 and the first half of 2007.
EHRCEPA conducted a project on women's rights and gender equality in 5 project sites in 2006
The projects were implemented in Dire Dawa, Somali project sites, Debre Birhan, Mida Woromo, and Merhabete districts through house-to-house education, school competitions, drama and songs, and the organization of village-based human rights violations monitoring groups. A total of 13,235 community and 6,349 community members and school communities were addressed through house-to-house and school competitions respectively in 2006. EHRCEPA also organized 142 village based human rights violation monitoring group (VBHRVMG) in the year 2006.
The overall project activities of the association undertaken from 2004-2006 were assessed by external evaluators
The evaluation comprised all the activities implemented in the existing project sites and it was conducted from May 8-June 5, 2006. After a one-day enriching workshop together with stakeholders and the staff, the final report was submitted to the donors and EHRCEPA.
A strategic plan for the next 3 years (2007 - 2009) was formulated
The new strategic plan of the Association was designed by incorporating additional kebeles within the existing districts and additional districts within the existing zones. Professionals from OCIC (Organization Capacity Improvement Consultants) and nine planning teams of resource persons and employees of the association participated. The plan was ratified at a consensus-building workshop held on 12 Aug 2006 at CRDA. Different stakeholders drawn from the government, NGOs, staff of EHRCEPA and volunteers participated in the workshop.
EHRCEPA Community Conversations mobilized the society to increase voluntary counseling and testing (VCT).
In Merhabete Woreda, the number of people who take VCT is increasing from 42 in 2003, 725 in 2004, 678 in 2005, 1980 in 2006 and 2581in the first half of 2007, and in Midda Woroma from 350 in 2005, 616 in 2006 and 1090 in the first half of 2007. Moreover, stigma and discrimination has been reduced and the people started looking after PLWHA. Community based organizations in Merhabete (Fetira, Harogenda, Yessa) drafted their bylaw incorporating articles about gender and HIV/AIDS and have been commented by the Woreda justice office.
EHRCEPA human rights monitoring activities on children's and girls' rights saved many.
A total of 119 kids were saved from Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) practice in both Midda Woroma and Mehrebete districts through pre-counseling and education of pregnant women in the first half of 2007. The circumcisers also swore not to conduct FGM through EHRCEPA village-based human rights education. The anti-HTP committee and school clubs supported by EHRCEPA stopped a total of 199 early marriages (133 girls in 2006 and 166 girls in the first half of 2007) in Mida Woromo and Merhabete districts.
Two baseline survey on Women's Rights and Gender Equality with Emphasis to HIV/AIDS are Conducted in two districts
Recently, EHRCEPA conducted two baseline surveys in Amahara Region as well as Dire Dawa Council and Somali Regional States.
EHRCEPA Conducted Training on Project Cycle Management
The training was held at the CRDA's training centre from Jan 23 - 27/2005 in collaboration with the International Training Centre of the ILO based in Turin, Italy. The Participants were drawn from EHRCEPA staffs (District and Head Office), Addis Ababa different offices, capacity building and education offices of Dire Dawa Admin council, Mida Woromo and Merhabete Districts. A total of 15 people attended the training of which 5 were female and 10 male.
EHRCEPA Conducted Training on Managing Change and Conflict Management
EHRCEPA organized and implemented training on managing change and conflicts at the CRDA Head Office July 28-29, 2005 in Collaboration with the International Leadership Institute (ILI).
The Association participated in WWW2005 Forum, NewDelihi, India
Three EHRCEPA staff delegates attended the Fourth International Congress on Women Work and Health from Nov.27-30/2005 in India, New Delhi .Two of the delegates presented papers entitled Gender inequality and development, the best practice of EHRCEPA in prevention and promotion of human rights. Two EHRCEPA staff members of the Association took training on Participatory, Planning Monitoring and Evaluation(PPME) in Uganda
IIRR (International Institute of Rural Reconstruction) conducted training from May 1 - 12/2006 at Kampala, 17 participants (7 female and 10 male) from eight countries attended the training.

EHRCEPA is Implementing Family Based Children's Rights Protection Project
The association employed teachers and organized community steering committee to achieve the objectives of the project. A total of 325 boys and girls are currently attending tutorial classes and participating in children's rights protection clubs at 8 target schools. The project is also coupled with school competition programs and trainings to the club members.

Children who do not have access to formal education got the opportunity of learning through Alternative Basic Education Programs (ABEP)
A total of 200 boys and girls are currently attending ABEP in Merhabete and Mida Woromo districts of the North Shewa Zone. The programs include education on children's rights, HIV/AIDS, Women's rights and gender equality in addition to the other subjects.

The workshop will entertain the suggestions and views of the stakeholders and partners from various institutions and community members. 60 individuals representing the education offices, HIV/AIDS Secretariat bureaus , plan and Finance, Women's affairs ,Religious Organizations, and members of the association, all from the target areas will participate the workshop.
